(I hope that) people understand the struggles some young people are going through, just because they are different, and to see Charles’ life now, we have try to inspire and motivate young kids who are struggling to let them know anything is possible.” - Terence Blanchard talking about what he hopes audiences take away from FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES.

There’s a sense of excitement surrounding Lyric Opera’s upcoming production of the new opera FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES. The contemporary work, which delighted audiences in New York city this past fall, has a distinctive pedigree, it was conceived and created by two renowned artists outside of the traditional opera world. FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES comes from acclaimed jazz trumpeter and film score composer Terence Blanchard and celebrated filmmaker Kasi Lemmons. The opera is based on the memoir of award-winning New York Times columnist Charles Blow. It follows a young Charles’ journey to becoming a man, starting with his upbringing in rural Louisiana.
